NOTICE TO CLIENTS: The Indiana legislature recently enacted a law regarding emancipation of a child. Beginning July 1, 2012, a child 19 years of age will be considered emancipated and no further child support will be owed unless the child has a disability or has special needs. For children that turn 19 prior to July 1, 2012, the custodial parent has until the day prior to the child’s 21st birthday to file a petition for the payment of college expenses. If the child turns 19 after July 1, 2012, a petition to pay for college expenses must be filed no later than 1 day prior to the child’s 19th birthday.
